Ivor G. Davies
My interest in photography started in my late teens when as a teenager in the 1950’s I used old box style cameras and built a dark room where I developed and printed my photographs.
Moving to Penang in 1962 became a paradise of diversity and whilst spending most of my time driving water skiing boats for the British Army at Batu Feringhi beach it was here that I bought my first ‘modern’ cameras from a shop on Penang Road. An Olympus Trip, Pen EE half frame and Yashica 635 twin reflex etc.
The early photographs of Penang were taken using either one of these cameras or in fact an Ensign 120 Full View camera that we brought to Penang with us. (Any early ‘square’ photographs were taken on this)
Penang had a tremendous influence on my life but it was not until returning for a holiday some 40 years later in 2008 bringing with me some of my ‘family snaps’ that I realised that these should be made available to the People of Penang that I had otherwise only acknowledged in my poetry.
